Guatemala City Travel Information

When in Guatemala there are numerous transportation options for getting around Guatemala City. Domestic flights operated by TACA are available for travel from Guatemala City to Flores (near Tikal). Other popular modes of transportation include rental cars, buses, private shuttle vans, boats and tuk tuks.

A rental car will help you explore the country at your own leisurely pace. It will be good if you rent a four-wheel drive vehicle because the roads in the country can be bumpy and rough, particularly in rural areas. Buses, usually referred to as “chicken buses”, are economical and common mode of transportation for locals.

Tourists mostly prefer to travel in first-class (primera clase) buses operated between major Guatemalan cities, including Guatemala City, Puerto Barrios, Cobán, Flores, Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango. Taxis are easily available throughout the country. Cab can be rented in upscale, touristy areas in larger towns, while taxis can be rented from around the central square in small towns. Motorized rickshaws or tuk-tuks are yet another inexpensive mode of transportation and good to go short distances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Guatemala has two international airports. La Aurora International Airport (GUA) is the largest airport serving Guatemala City. It is located 6.4 km (4.0 miles) south of Guatemala City's center. The other airport is Flores Airport, near Tikal.

It takes around 3 hours to fly the shortest distance (2,422 km or 1,505 miles) between Guatemala and the United States on an airplane with an average speed of 560 miles.

Guatemala is undoubtedly safe to travel, but under the right conditions. Some regions in the country are safer than others. It’s best to stay informed about the red zones in the capital Guatemala City, the regions where most violence occurs, and certain public “chicken bus” routes which are prone to robberies. Avoid travelling during night as it’s not always recommended. When walking in public or using public transportation, keep your money and valuables secure and away from public gaze. Following these simple tips will ensure you a safe travel in Guatemala.

The best months for travel to Guatemala City is from December to March, which is the peak tourist season here. It coincides with winter months in most northern countries as well as with Guatemala’s dry season. This is also the best time weather-wise when greenery is still all around after the rains. Those who want to avoid the crowds should consider visiting during off-season near the end or beginning of the rainy season as the weather is still pleasant.

Since La Aurora International Airport is situated only 6 miles from downtown Guatemala, the easiest way to reach the city center is by either taxi or public transportation. A taxi will take approximately 30 minutes to reach downtown, while the public bus system will take more than an hour.
