Best Things to See and Do in Muscle Shoals

Muscle Shoals gained wide acclaim world over because of its vibrant music scene. The FAME Recording Studios first brought Muscle Shoals on the world music scene. One of the best-known studios in the world in the mid-1960s, the FAME Recording Studios is now a haven for songwriters and singers by virtue of being the epicentre of a new sound called the “Muscle Shoals Sound”. Music lovers will also love visiting the Alabama Music Hall of Fame where professionals of the music industry, including producers, performers, songwriters and artists, are honoured.

But there’s more to Muscle Shoals than just music. If you are keen in architecture and want to know about the use of natural materials in housing then make your first stop at the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House. This spectacular Usonian design house prominently features cantilevered roofing, an undercover carport and a large stone hearth inside. Each of the beautifully designed rooms also has a separate door leading to the gardens. Take a tour of the Rosenbaum House to see the original furnishings at one of the few Usonian properties existing in America today.

Visit Ivy Green, Helen Keller’s birthplace, where you will see all things related to her, including hundreds of pieces of memorabilia and personal effects. The famous well-pump can also be seen here where she used to sit and learn. Participate in the annual Helen Keller Festival, which is held at her former home in Tuscumbia, when visiting here in late June.

Plan a visit to the impressive 1,384-metres-long Wilson Lock and Dam, built in 1918, spanning the Tennessee River between Muscle Shoals and Florence. Over 3,700 barges and boats pass through it each year. The revolving restaurant here is also worth visiting.

The scenic River Heritage Park overlooking the Wilson Dam and Tennessee River is a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic with family and friends. You can also take a stroll along the shaded tree-lined pathways, or cool off in the interaction fountain, or even consider a riverside walk at the park.

With many diverse sightseeing and entertainment options, you can undoubtedly look forward to fun-filled, thrilling times whenever planning a holiday to Muscle Shoals.
