United Airlines is set to roll out Starlink satellite internet on its first aircraft this spring, offering passengers high-speed, uninterrupted online access. The service will initially be available on regional routes using Embraer E-175 aircraft with a maximum of 88 seats. Over the next few years, the airline plans to equip its entire fleet with Starlink technology, aiming to revolutionize the in-flight experience.

United Airlines first announced its collaboration with Starlink in September last year, stating that testing would begin in spring 2025. However, the timeline has been accelerated, with tests now scheduled to start next month. The first commercial flights featuring Starlink’s satellite internet are expected this spring.

The airline has clarified that Starlink’s internet service will be free but only for members of United’s frequent flyer program, MileagePlus. Enrollment in MileagePlus is free, but users are required to provide basic personal information. “We have big plans for our MileagePlus members this year,” said Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus. “The focus is on introducing Starlink on as many aircraft as possible – and as quickly as possible. Not only will this revolutionize the United flying experience, but it will also open up a host of new partnerships and benefits for our members that would otherwise not be possible.”

Starlink, Elon Musk’s SpaceX service, offers download speeds between 40 and 220 Mbps. It is already used by several airlines, including Hawaiian Airlines, Airbaltic, and Zipair. In May 2024, Qatar Airways became the first major carrier to announce Starlink-equipped aircraft, providing free satellite internet on select Boeing 777s.

With United joining the Starlink initiative, it became one of the first major U.S. airlines to adopt this cutting-edge technology, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing passenger connectivity and experience.
