Plan for your travel weeks ahead

Luggage is an important part in air travel. Nowadays luggage has been categorized into ‘carry-on’ and ‘checked baggage’. Many people don’t want to deal with issues like waiting in queues, waiting for bags or lost baggage, and prefer a carry-on. Here are the important things to note when preferring a carry-on:

  • Standard carry-on size should be 22 inches by 9 inches by 14 inches
  • Put all your liquids in containers of 3 oz or smaller
  • All of your liquids should fit in a one-quart bag
  • Exceptions are made for saline for contact lens wearers and baby formula

When carrying checked baggage, it will be easier for you to travel light and pack within the prescribed weight limit as according to your fare type. For overweight baggage you will need to pay additional baggage fees. So, it’s always important to consider how little to carry rather than how much. It’s also essential as sometimes you may be confronted with a situation when your baggage will be needed to be unwrapped at the security.

Passport Validity: If you are travelling to a foreign country then it must be ensured that you are travelling on a current passport with a validity of at least six (6) months before your trip. You will be in a rather unpleasant situation if your passport is about to expire as many countries don’t like it.

Prepare a Packing List ONE WEEK BEFORE travel

If you have planned your travel then a packing list is also essential for all. Many people pack up for their trip within 15 minutes, and don’t care whether something important has been left out. Though this is not always good. You need to take time and make a packing list one week before travel to save yourself from stress. It’s good to ask some important questions yourself and pack whatever is needed.

  • Is everything available to be in your packing list?
  • Are you carrying liquids, and if so have they been placed in travel-sized containers?
  • Are you done with your laundry and have clean clothes to pack?
  • Have you reviewed your passport status?
  • Pack one personal item and one carry-on bag
  • Pack medication that you might need
  • Pack your personal entertainment devices such as laptop, tablet etc

Things to do 24 HOURS BEFORE flight

Here are some of the things you need to do 24 hours before flight for smooth sailing through the security:

  • Check-in online
  • Print boarding pass or get e-Boarding Pass on your phone when travelling with carry-on

What to do at Security when in USA

When in the USA, here are some of the important things to consider keeping in view TSA requirements:

  • Wear shoes that can be easily removed at the airport and put on
  • If your boarding pass has “TSA Pre” then you won’t require taking off your shoes unless you are wearing work boots or hiking boots with metal in them as they will set off the metal detector
  • Don’t wear metal jewellery so as to easily pass through the metal detector
  • Wear pants that can stay up even if you are asked to take off your belt at the security
  • Put your zip lock bag of liquids in the outside pocket of your carry-on just to get quickly in security
  • Liquids not required by you the plane should be put in your checked bag
  • Arrive at the airport one hour before for a domestic flight, while at least two hours before an international flight
  • Head to the check-in counter of your airline for checking luggage, and provide your photo ID when asked for
  • Go directly to the security when not checking a bag if travelling domestically
  • Don’t put anything in your pockets if full-body scanners are used at the airport
  • Show your passport or ID card and your boarding pass to the security
  • Get in the queue for the metal detector or scanner, and enter the scanner when asked for by the security person
  • Grab your belongings from the conveyor belt quickly, and head to the plane for boarding by checking the monitor for your gate

By following all these guidelines you are successfully through security and good to go!
