Edinburgh Airport continues to expand its long-haul connections, offering more direct flights to major international destinations. The airport, which handled over 15 million passengers in 2024, is aiming for further growth. With nearly 40 airlines serving Edinburgh, the number of long-haul routes is increasing. Airlines such as Delta, JetBlue, United, Air Canada, and Qatar Airways are adding or expanding services.

Delta Air Lines will operate flights from Edinburgh to three U.S. destinations in 2025. Flights to New York JFK will begin in March, followed by Atlanta in April and Boston in May. The airline will use its Boeing 767-300 aircraft, with daily services from Boston and additional weekly flights from Atlanta.

JetBlue will launch a new daily Boston route on May 22, using its Airbus A321 fleet. It will also continue flights from New York JFK, which started in May 2024. JetBlue’s expansion adds nearly 5,000 monthly seats each way on these transatlantic routes.

United Airlines has connected Edinburgh to the U.S. for decades. It currently operates flights to Newark Liberty, Washington Dulles, and Chicago O’Hare. The airline recently marked 20 years of service between Edinburgh and Newark. During peak summer, the route will have double-daily flights operated by Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

Air Canada links Edinburgh to Toronto Pearson with a daily summer service using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The route offers seating for 288 passengers, with business, premium economy, and economy classes available.

WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, serves Edinburgh with flights to Calgary, Halifax, and Toronto. Toronto and Calgary flights start in May, with Calgary operating three times weekly on the 787-9. Toronto will have daily flights on the Boeing 737 MAX 8.

American Airlines is resuming its Philadelphia-Edinburgh route after a six-year break. Starting May 24, the daily flight will run until October 5, using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. This makes American Airlines the fourth U.S. carrier to serve Edinburgh.

Qatar Airways maintains a strong presence at Edinburgh with a double-daily route to Doha. The airline uses both Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The A350 provides more capacity, seating up to 283 passengers.

Emirates connects Edinburgh to Dubai and has introduced its new Airbus A350-900 on this route. The airline resumed flights to Edinburgh in November after a long break due to the pandemic. It first launched the route in 2018 with a Boeing 777-300ER.

Virgin Atlantic offers the second-longest route from Edinburgh, flying to Orlando. This service, beginning in April, will operate twice weekly using the Airbus A350-1000. Virgin’s higher-capacity aircraft on this route can carry up to 397 passengers.

The longest flight from Edinburgh is to Beijing, operated by Hainan Airlines. This route spans nearly 4,300 nautical miles, with flights exceeding 10 hours. The airline will run up to four weekly flights using Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

Edinburgh Airport is planning further growth. It aims to surpass 16 million passengers in 2025 and expand links to Asia and North America. CEO Gordon Dewar has suggested launching direct flights to India, given the large South Asian population in the UK. Currently, travelers from Scotland must connect through Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul to reach India.

To support increased traffic, the airport is investing in infrastructure improvements. Plans include expanding the check-in hall and developing new shopping and dining facilities. These upgrades will enhance the travel experience as the airport continues to grow.
